COE 101 Laptop Component - Using Windows Explorer

The most powerful way of managing the folders and files of information in your computer is by using a Windows Explorer interface. 

Click on the My Computer or the My Documents icon on your desktop.
Click on the Folders button on the toolbar.
You can also right click on the start button and select Explore.

To see the hierarchy of folders on a disk drive

1.         Click a folder in the left pane of the window to display its contents in the right pane.

2.         Click the plus signs to display the folders within a folder.  Click the minus sign to reclose the main folder.

Notes

·        To change the size of either pane of the window, drag the bar that separates the two panes.

·        You can also display the contents of a folder by clicking it in either the right or left pane.

 To change the appearance of items in a folder

Open the pulldown menu View, try clicking Large Icons, Small Icons, List, and finally Details.

Note

·     You can point to Arrange Icons on the View menu to sort the items by name, size, date, and type, depending on the view.  Or, in the right pane you can click on the heading with the word and it will also sort for you.

To show or hide the status bar within a program

On the View menu, click Status Bar.

Note

·     When the command has a check mark next to it, it means that the status bar is displayed.

·     When you point to a menu command, the status bar at the bottom of the window displays a description of what that command does. On the View menu, you can click Status Bar if the status bar is not visible in your window.

 Using the mouse in Windows Explorers

Notes

·     You can select more than one item by holding down the SHIFT key and single-click the first and last item you want included.  You can also select one of the items, hold down the SHIFT key and use the cursor arrows.

·        You can select individual items that are separated by holding down the CTRL key while single-clicking those items.

·        Using SHIFT, CTRL, the mouse and the cursor arrows in tandem can make managing files and folders very quick and easy.

·        Drag and Drop functions are much the same as the desktop and other Windows areas.

 To create a folder

1.         In the left pane, click the drive in Windows Explorer where you want to create the new folder.

2.         On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.

3.         The new folder appears with a temporary name.

4.         Type a name for the new folder, and then press ENTER.

Note

·        If you want to create a new folder within a folder, click the folder and then follow steps two and three above.

 Copying files from floppy to hard disk and putting all this info to use

1.      Put the disk with the COE documents on it into your floppy disk drive.

2.      In the left pane Click on the 3.5" Floppy (A:) Drive.  You will see the contents of the floppy listed in the right pane.

3.      Click once on the top file on the floppy listed in the right pane.

4.      Hold down the CTRL key and hit the A key.  This will Select All of the files listed.

5.      Click once again on the top file.

6.      Hold down the SHIFT key and hit the cursor down arrow key.  This will select files listed after the one you started with.

7.      Click once again on the top file.

8.      Hold down the SHIFT key and point and Click other files with the mouse.  This will also select other files solidly from your starting point.

9.      Hold down the CTRL key and point and Click other files to remove (or add files) not solidly in sequence.

10.  Last time, Click once on any file.  Hold down CTRL key and hit the A key to Select All the files.

11.  Point the mouse anywhere ON these files and hold down the left mouse button.

12.  CAREFULLY, Drag them over to the left pane and Drop them in the New Folder you just created.  Do this by letting go of the mouse button when you see that the New Folder is highlighted.

13.  Click the New Folder in the left pane.  Look in the right pane for the COE docs you just placed there.

14.  Right-Click on any one of them.  You will then see a pop up menu appear. Click on Rename.  Type in a new name for the file and hit Enter.

15.  Right-Click on the New Folder in the left pane.  Again, you will then see a pop up menu appear. Click on Rename.  Type in a new name (ex. COE docs) for the folder and hit Enter.

 

Assignment

1.      Open Windows Explorer.

2.      Create a new folder within your My Documents folder.

3.      Name this folder using your own name or initials and COE.

4.      Move all of your COE documents and image files that you created or saved from previous assignments from your My Documents folder into your newly created folder.

5.      Drag and drop all of your COE documents from your new folder to a floppy disk.

6.      Close Windows Explorer.
